Castle “Saint Miklos” (Chynadiyevsky) 33 km from Grand Family Zakarpattia
The amazing St Miklós (Chynadiyevo) Castle with two corner towers, one-metre-thick walls and mysterious dungeons was built in the 14th century by Baron Pereni. It is located in the village of Chynadiyovo, near the city of Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region.
In 1657, the fortress was heavily damaged by the Polish troops of Count Lubomirski.
In 1703-1711, it was the residence of Ferenc II Rákóczi, a fierce fighter for Hungarian independence. Later, the castle was converted into a palace.
During the Nazi occupation, the castle was turned into a terrible prison, from which almost no one escaped alive.
Not even all locals are aware of the long history of this building. Unlike most Transcarpathian castles, St Miklos (Chynadiyevo) has not been very popular among tourists until recently. Now, the castle has been rented for 30 years by a local artist Joseph Bartosz. The artist undertook to turn the fortress into a cultural centre.
St Miklós Castle (Chynadiyevsky) is open to visitors daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Entrance and a tour of the castle are free of charge.
